The 1984 redesign introduced the option Xtracab extended cab double row. There was also a fuel injection model, the 22R-E. Two diesel engines were also offered, the turbo 2L and 2L-T. The diesel was discontinued in the U.S. after model year 1986, this was due to higher performance expectations of customers and the wide availability of cheap gasoline. The following year came the introduction of a turbo option, the 22R-TE. The solid front axle was changed to a suspension Independent front torsion bar setup in the 4×4 model in 1986, and optional automatic front locking hubs and an electronic transfer case is also added. A V6 engine was introduced in 1988.
Toyota introduced a new generation of Hilux in most markets in late 1988, but the fourth generation remained in production until 1997 in South Africa. Toyota says this was due to South Africa "content law" and therefore it was cheaper to keep producing the fourth generation of Hilux, rather than redesign the plant for the fifth generation.

Recreational vehicles (RV) are built on truck chassis Toyota since the introduction of Toyota Chinook in 1977, a standard duty chassis until 1993 when the last Winnebago and coaches national in his last completed 1992 chassis. Since then there have been a number of manufacturers that have used the small Toyota truck chassis to build homes class C as a small engine Chinook, RBR, New Horizons, Coachman, Huntsman, National (under both the Dolphin and the names of Seabreaze), Winnebago Industries (both under the Itasca and Winnebago name), and Gardner Pacific (in Name Sunrader). Since 1986 RV manufacturers began using the heavier car Toyota 1 ton and chassis.
Reputation
The Hilux has gained a reputation for exceptional strength and reliability, even during sustained heavy use and / or abuse, and concerns often as "The Indestructible Car". This was reinforced by the BBC show Top Gear motor, when a 1988 Hilux with 190,000 miles (308,000 km) on the odometer has been extraordinary abused (series 3, episodes 5 and 6). This consisted of driving down a flight of stairs, scraping buildings, crashing headfirst into a tree being washed into the sea and are fully immersed, driving through a garden shed, dropping a caravan on it, hitting with a wrecking ball, the establishment of the cab and the bed area on fire, and finally, putting it on top of a block of 240 feet (73 m) of the apartments that was later destroyed by control demolition. Although now suffering severe structural damage, the truck was still running after being repaired without spare parts and only with typical tools and equipment found in the portfolio of a car such as screwdrivers, motor oil, and a wrench, but was used WD40 to get the engine is recovered after being at sea. The Hilux currently resides as one of the background decorations in the study of Top Gear.
In the 2006 series (the Series 8, episode 3), a Hilux was chosen by Jeremy Clarkson as his platform to create an amphibious vehicle. With help, Clarkson rigged the truck with an outboard motor mass, ironically made by Honda, and the steering in the truck. The truck, redubbed the "Toybota" was driven by Clarkson over several kilometers by road and two miles (3 km) across open water, before dumping during a lap. Once recovered, the vehicle was moved back to Top Gear studio, where a Clarkson said he was confident he would be the only one capable of driving the car home, it was the indestructible Hilux. However, Clarkson could not get the Hilux started which led to his co-hosts to believe that Clarkson had finally destroyed the "indestructible." In the 2007 series (Series 10, Episode 2), Clarkson has opted for a Nissan pickup instead of a Hilux in a second amphibious challenge, successfully crossing the English Channel in the vehicle.
In 2007, Top Gear out a special program in which Clarkson and James May raced a customized model 2005 to 1996 Hilux north magnetic pole in northern Canada against Richard Hammond with a sled dog. The race, known as the Hilux Arctic Challenge, the truck made the first car to reach the magnetic North Pole.
Outside television, these vehicles have been known to exceed 300,000 miles (~ 500,000 km) with regular maintenance. It is also famous for being used as a vehicle improvised combat militias technical and "irregular military forces, especially in Third World conflicts. The Toyota War between Libya and Chad was named because of the use of Hilux trucks as light cavalry by the Chadian army. These vehicles have also been used in the Iraq war explosive ordnance improvised (FDI). The militias have been known to equip this vehicle with stolen post Soviet missiles and equipment.
